The 33km Mountain Challenge allows you to step up from the traditional half marathon distance and test yourself without committing to our ultramarathon. The course takes you up Mt Oxford and then on a trip down to the Wharfedale Track. This race is ever-changing with terrain and scenery, and with around 2000m of elevation gain over the distance, it's a good challenge!

Start/Finish Line: Coopers Creek, Mountain Road
Race Briefing: 6:40am
Minimum Age: 18yr

Additional Info: There is a cut off at 11:00am at the Wharfedale Hut (approx 13km mark). If you are unable to make this time then you will be escorted back to the Finish Line by vehicle.
The course starts and finishes in Coopers Creek and takes you on an adventure in the Mt Oxford Conservation Area. Competitors head up Mt Oxford and along the summit before turning right at the Mt Oxford Route junction. There you descend steeply to the Wharfedale Hut. You will check in at the Wharfedale Hut and enjoy a recharge at the Aid Station. After a small (or big) refuel you will rejoin the Wharfedale Track and head over the saddle and towards the Ryde Falls Track junction. At this point you will join up with the 15km, 21km, and Ultra competitors and head back towards Coopers Creek.
The trail is variable in difficulty with some very technical sections (in particular the descent down Mt Oxford Route). This course also includes some great trails to get some pace (Wharfedale Track). You will encounter a little bit of everything underfoot, including some small creek crossings.
The 33km distance is a nice step up from the usual 21km races and with the stunning scenery and ever-changing conditions underfoot it is an exciting course. There is just under 2000m of elevation gain over the 33km so it's no walk in the park.
You are going to need all of your compulsory gear. (Please see Athlete Info for the Compulsory Gear.)
The 33km Mountain Challenge is officially a UTMB Index Race for 2023. The UTMB World Series is a way Elite and everyday runners can access the events in the UTMB series across the globe.
